The Legend of Orval tells of Countess Mathilde of Tuscany, whose ring fell into a lake within a valley in which she was holidaying. Distraught, she prayed for her ring to be returned to her and in return, she would build a monastery. A trout rose majestically out of the water with her ring in its mouth and Countess Mathilde exclaimed, "Truly this place is a Val d'Or!". She fulfilled her vow and build a monastery and till today, the coat of arms of Orval bears a trout with a ring in its mouth.

Orval is not just a beer; it’s a representation of a centuries-old brewing tradition steeped in history and rarity. As one of the few Trappist beers in the world, Orval is crafted under the watchful eye of monks at the Abbaye Notre-Dame d'Orval in Belgium. The Trappist designation is reserved for beers produced within the walls of Trappist monasteries, adhering to strict guidelines that emphasize quality, authenticity, and a commitment to the monastic lifestyle. With only eleven Trappist breweries globally, each one is a testament to craftsmanship, making their products incredibly rare and sought after.

What sets Orval apart is its unique brewing process, which combines both pale and caramel malts, hops, and a distinct Brettanomyces yeast strain. This gives the beer a complex flavor profile that evolves as it ages, showcasing notes of fruity esters, earthy hops, and a gentle sourness that captivates the palate. With its characteristic golden amber color and a dry, refreshing finish, Orval exemplifies the artistry of Trappist brewing, where every sip tells a story of dedication and craftsmanship.
